get the look -- velvet dresses.

ATTAINABLE: Free People Daydream Lace Tank in Black (also in Ivory)
www.freepeople.com; $78
There's something about this Free People tank top that's so fun and flirty.  Maybe it's the lace or the pretty tiers, but it's just so feminine.  I love the black color for winter evenings out, but the ivory version would be absolutely perfect for spring paired with simple denim cutoffs and a pair of pretty sandals.

I may not have worn a velvet dress since kindergarten -- I think that the mid-90s was the last time that they were truly in style -- but I've been seeing charming versions popping up all over the place this year.  I love the light sheen of the fabric and it's just so soft.  To avoid looking inexpensive, I love velvet frocks that are cut and fitted perfectly and ones that mix in other fabrics -- so chic.

EXTRAVAGANCE: Black Halo Velvet Jackie O Dress
www.shopbop.com; $390
This perfectly-tailored black cocktail dress is the epitome of chic.  I love the little sleeves and gentle drape at the neck, and the fit through the bodice and into the pretty pencil skirt is nothing short of fabulous.  This would be positive perfection for an office cocktail party.

DEAL: DKNYC Crewneck Tunic Dress
www.nordstrom.com; $119
I am completely enamored by this dress.  Perfect with tights and booties, the shape is so pretty and easy.  I love the deep blue color that goes past a high blue but stops short of navy, and the what really wins me over is the pretty chiffon trim that gives the dress a truly ethereal quality.

EXTRAVAGANCE: Presley Skyle Velvet Burnout Dress
www.nordstrom.com; $158
Perfect with a pair of pumps for dinner out or flat boots for running errands on weekends, this dress is so charming.  I love the velvet pattern and smoky gray color, and the chiffon overlay is just hippie-esque enough combined with the floaty sleeves.

DEAL: MINKPINK Formerly Known As Dress
www.threadsence.com; $96
This flirty little dress is just too sweet to resist.  I love the velvet polka dot pattern and the pretty sheer overlay.  The skirt is swingy, the shape is fresh, and the whole thing feels young without being juvenile -- perfect paired with opaque black tights and a fun pair of booties.

Are YOU wearing velvet dresses this winter?
xo Josie
Thanks to Free People, Shopbop, Nordstrom, and Threadsence for the photos.

Velvet is such a rich, warm fabric for winter. I would totally splurge on the Black Halo dress! Not only does the fabric look cozy, but the dress's style is so architectural and striking. xo style, she wrote

I LOVE that velvet dress!!! Velvet has been the victim of horrible fashion crimes. I am so glad it is getting a reprieve.
